JULIO ROMO
Expertise: Public Relations, Corporate and Government Communication Strategy, Reputation Management, Digital Strategy and Campaigns, Social Media
Julio strongly believes that PR practitioners should not be blinded or intimidated by Facebook, Twitter and other New Media tools. Used correctly, these channels can provide opportunity for better engagement between business, governments and consumers. What one should look at is how people’s behaviors are changing especially in the way they interact and communicate in this day and age – which is very much in groups, in a peer-environment and in real time.
Julio has twelve years of experience working across a range of sectors in-house and agency-side in the UK, Europe and Asia. He conducted this same public workshop to packed rooms in Malaysia, Indonesia and the UAE in 2010 and 2011. He was invited to conduct this workshop internally for the Ministry of Women of Malaysia last March 2011. He is a freelance journalist and an accredited trainer for the UK Chartered Institute of Public Relations (www.cipr.co.uk) which is the professional body of the UK’s PR industry. He is also a trainer for the Council of Europe, sits on the Council for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, and is a member of its Social Media Advisory Panel, advising on the impact of social media on the changing media and publishing landscape.
He has worked for established brands and government clients in the development of their communication campaigns. He worked with Bacardi Limited as a counsel and in a leadership position on their use of new digital and social media channels in an integrated communications campaign. He worked with them when they brought in MSN as a central media partner that allowed Bacardi and their brand ambassador Michael Schumacher to reach audiences online.
He also worked with Sony Ericsson when he developed a creative plan to maximize the reach of its brand ambassador Maria Sharapova by tapping into her interests in fashion. He combined Maria’s interest and Sony Ericsson’s marketing goals into an integrated communications program that raised the profile of the brand. He also worked with the UK Trade and Investment when he brought in Reuters as a media partner for their conference that promoted investment opportunities for UK technology start-ups in China and India. Past and current clients include De Beers, Red Hat, Council of Europe and Intel Capital.
Some of the trainings that Julio delivered in association with the CIPR include “Social Media to New Media For Old Hands” as well as “Social Media Relations” – which gives senior PR practitioners insight into how social media is used in journalism. He conducted extensive research on the rise of user-generated content and its adoption by news outlets including the BBC. At a conference in Singapore, he delivered a talk entitled, “Social Media: First For Breaking News”.
